The Book Club at LCGS – The Bookwoman of Troublesome Creek (via Zoom)

The Bookwoman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson. Set in 1936 Kentucky, this captivating novel follows Cussy Carter, a young woman with a rare genetic condition that gives her blue skin. As a traveling librarian with the Pack Horse Library Project, she journeys through the Appalachian Mountains, delivering books to isolated families. Along the way, she faces prejudice, hardship, and danger while sharing the life-changing power of reading. Based on true events.
We will discuss poverty in Appalachia during the Depression, families with rare genetic diseases, bias against “coloreds,” coal mining families, WPA jobs, human medical studies, and when is the cure worse than the condition?
