The Book Club at LCGS

May 27 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm EDT

Join us via Zoom for a discussion of When the Jessamine Grows by Donna Everhart.

When the Jessamine Grows follows Joetta McBride, a North Carolina farm wife trying to hold her family together as the Civil War reaches into every corner of her life. Though opposed to slavery and hoping to remain neutral, Joetta finds herself increasingly isolated after her teenage son runs away to join the Confederate cause and her husband leaves to bring him home.

Our discussion will explore how war affected ordinary Southern families, especially women left behind at home, as well as themes of loyalty, neutrality, survival, community pressure, and the difficult choices people faced during the Civil War. We will also consider how these experiences may connect to the untold stories of our own ancestors.

This is an LCGS membership-only event, but we welcome anyone who is interested to attend one time as an LCGS guest. All attendees must register in advance to attend: https://zoom.us/meeting/register/fbADUbLoTtGAylCHRrstMw
