 . Free males, 18-50 years of age were members unless otherwise exempted.
 . Each privatewas required to have a rifle or musket, a pound of lead and half a pound of powder.
 . A Company was suppose to consist of from 40 to 64 men who musterd 56 times a year for drill and training.
 . 5 Companies madea Battalion.
 . 2 Battalions constituted a Regiment.
 . 2 annual regimental musters were required.

It was common for illitrate people to sign their name with an X to indicate their presence and approval on a range of documents used by family researchers.
It also can be used for "unknown".
 
Y-DNA
This is genetic material passed down from father to son. Because surnames also pass from father to son, Y-DNA tests can confirm (or disprove) genealogical links through a paternal line.
